This is an example of the detailed directions our Grand Staircase
Escalante National Monument Photographic Guide provides.
Round Valley Slot
The first slot was Round Valley slot. Reach this by driving 25 miles west from Escalante on Utah 12 to Cannonville.
Turn south on Cottonwood Canyon Road and drive about 14 miles to Round Valley Draw. There is a small road turning
west, not particularly well marked. This road requires a high clearance, 4WD vehicle. Follow the dry creek bed
as well as you can, not taking the forks that angle south to the
ridge. After what seems like forever (actually about 1½ miles) you will come to a trailhead with a small
registration box. Collect your photo gear and walk the creek bed west. In less than ½ mile the creek bed
will suddenly open up in front of you — don't step in! The slot canyon has literally eroded down from the creek
bed.
This was a location where we were glad we had a rope.
Tom climbed down the slot, with only moderate difficulty, and Gary lowered our camera packs over the side of the slot about 25 - 30 feet to Tom. Gary then climbed down. We reversed this when
we exited the slot. After the initial descent into the slot it is a moderately easy slot to walk. There were, however,
a few mud holes that were a challenge to cross without getting wet and muddy. The colors are mostly gray but with
some reddish areas. There were several areas of nice patterns. We were in this slot for over 2 hours and took lots
of slides. Mid morning and early afternoon light is best to bring out the colors in this slot canyon.
