Emerald Lake
The trail guide says Emerald Lake is a 602 feet elevation climb but it feels like a 1600 feet climb. Bring adequate
water supply, food and clothing for this trek that is spectacular at sunrise. Check your park map for directions
to the Bear Lake trailhead, as this is the beginning of the trail to Emerald Lake. From the Bear Lake Trailhead
you will see the sign directing you to the Emerald Lake trail on your left. The trail is well marked and well maintained.
The walk up to Emerald Lake from the Bear Lake Trailhead will take you fifty minutes. You need to be at Emerald
Lake at the official sunrise time so plan your time accordingly.
The sun will begin to creep down the mountainside just at the
official sunrise time illuminating the golden glow across the lake. Within thirty minutes the sun will reach the
lakes edge. You will need a gradient neutral density filter here to control contrast. Early October is an ideal
time to visit Emerald Lake as the sun and lake are aligned for great photography.
