Yellowstone Institute
The last location we want you to photograph is a favorite of both Tom and Gary —
the Yellowstone Institute. The Institute is located east of Roosevelt on the
north side of the road. This is an absolutely ideal location when the cottonwoods are yellow.
The corral and buildings are weathered wood and interesting in
and of themselves. However, what really appeals to us is the yellow of the cottonwood combined with the weathered
corral and the small creek that runs through the campus. We spent nearly two hours shooting here. Close ups of
the wood, the corral fence from different angles but mostly the cottonwoods and the creek, typically with the mountains
in the background. This is ideal shooting shortly after sunrise, just as the sun comes over the ridge. We would
suggest you check your sunrise time and be there shortly after sunrise. The sun is fairly low in the sky because
of the mountains to the east and therefore gives nice texture to the shooting, as well as either backlight or side
light to the cottonwoods. This was one of our great shoots in Yellowstone.
